A Dutch Braid Tutorial Even Beginners Can Handle

Summer is in the air. It’s time to step out of your comfort zone and try some new hairstyles. Dutch braids should be one of your options. Why? They are effortlessly cool and gorgeous.

What I personally like about Dutch braids is that they are so versatile. Whatever hairstyle you got, they all look great with these stunning braids. Straight hair will be cool, and wavy one will be unexpectedly girly and romantic. Yet, when it comes to Dutch braids, many girls out there somewhat hesitate since most of the time they are quite confused about this style with the French-braiding. We are here to help you put an end to this situation.

This is a step-by-step tutorial turn you to a master at Dutch braids. Scroll through and practice to get used to the hand movements.

Step 1: Part

The straighter you part your hair, the easier the next steps will get. To create a perfect Dutch braid, the part should be placed in the middle of the nape of your neck from top to bottom. Leave each of the sections over two sides of your shoulder.

Part 2: Section

Let’s start with one section. Divide it into three tiny pieces at your hairline.

Part 3: Dutch Braid

The key difference between Dutch braid with the French one is that to do a Dutch braid, weave each piece under instead of over another piece. Bear that in your mind!

Part 4: Continue Dutch Braiding

Keep adding more hair when you weave a new section. Always cross the right part under the middle once, then put the left strand under that middle one.

Part 5: Regular Braid

Things will get easier when you reach the nape of your neck. Now, do three-strand braid as usual.

Part 6: Secure the Dutch Braid

Secure your braid with a particular tie.

Our fave: the Sephora Collection’s Snag-Free Hair Elastics ($4).

Part 7: Another side

Repeat the process on the other side.

Part 8: Keep braiding

The finished look!

Try out Josh Rosebrook Serum Spray ($28) to create more dimensions and volumes to your braids.
